The sculptural potential in clay - its fluidity when soft, its acceptance of texture, and its crisp geometric possibilities when leatherhard - lend it particularly well to expressing the ambiguous nature between the worlds of plants, animals, and machines. The multitude of surface options also contributes to the viewer’s difficulty with this object categorization dilemma. Each tile could possibly be interpreted to fit into several worlds. They contrast with each other as well as converse with each other. Windows lead one from one layer to another, and then to question the content, disturbing or otherwise, just under the surface.

The tiles within the series “Caught” show forms contained, constrained, held or encased by wires or spikes, and framed within windows.
